Sunday Morning String Band w/ Farmer & Tomek Maciaszek

Sunday Morning String Band:
Sunday Morning String in a traditional folk/bluegrass trio from Kelowna BC Canada

Farmer The Band:
Farmer The Band are multi tasking, multi instrumentalist, indie folksters based in southern BC. Their Americana – sorry, Canadiana – songwriting and storytelling has taken the new band twice across Canada. The duo’s folk roots music fills the stage with vocal harmonies, guitar, bass, harmonica, drums, percussion, and anything else that’s in arm’s (or foot’s) reach. Like their songs, their stage set up will draw you in. It may look gimmicky but the “two-person-one-man-band” delivers a full ensemble sound live off the floor with no looping, just honest musicality and love for what they do.
http://www.farmertheband.com/

Tomek Maciaszek is a local, Vernon singer songwriter who retired from the punk scene to pursue a life of honest folk. Drawing heavily upon the wisdom and vocal style of Steve Earle, he continues to explore the oddities of human existence through 6 strings and the will to use them.

Compassion Gorilla (www.compassiongorilla.com)
New Release: COALESCE
Preview the new album HERE! https://compassiongorilla.bandcamp.com/

With their third studio album, Coalesce, Compassion Gorilla offers up a unique interpretation of diverse and worldly musical styles, weaving together earthy and folkloric sounds with sophisticated and punchy modern sensibility. The album is officially released September 14th, and is accompanied by a busy fall tour in the band’s home province of BC.

Coalesce features 8 tracks of musical ingenuity. From the wizardry of the opening track’s cello feature, to the tight horn riffs of “Milk Thistle”, the psychedelic cumbia groove of “Music for the People”, and the 5/4-time Balkan-jazz stylings of “Son del Mar”, the album presents a steady stream of fresh ideas while maintaining an overall cohesive feel. Latin rhythms anchor the album in a steady, infectious groove, forming a bed for punchy brass harmonies, socially conscious lyrics, and rolling dub-delay effects. The warm, rootsy production style is reminiscent of an older age of recording, giving it a simple and concise sound.

Compassion Gorilla’s current sound, as presented here on Coalesce, has evolved over years of shifting membership, diverse collaborations and worldly travel. On tour promoting this new release the band boasts a 6-piece lineup that includes Daniel Cryderman (trombone and vocals), Chris Fretwell (guitar, charango, requinto and vocals), Dan Beer (drums), Suzanne Stirling (trumpet), Ariel Palacio (accordion), and Brin Porter (bass).

QUOTE:
“great storytelling and the international language of music command the stage at today’s festivals. Compassion Gorilla will find themselves front and centre again and again. With their eclectic blend of global rhythms and easy charm, they know how to bridge the gap between audience and performer.”

- Cal Coat, artistic director, World Beat Stage, Concord Pacific Vancouver Intl. Dragon Boat Festival

www.okomfest.com/smg-tickets

BIO:
No matter how many changes the music industry experiences, the one thing that always remains, is the power of a passionate live show. Caleb Hart has the ability to bring something fresh, honest and powerful every time he steps on a stage.

A natural born performer since he was a young boy growing up in Trinidad & Tobago; Hart has been taking his music across Canada and around the world to The Caribbean, Australia, USA and New Zealand full time since 2012. Along with racking up well over 700 shows in that time, he has also released 5 records, 6 singles, and won prestigious awards from Edmonton Folk Fest, the Western Canadian Music Awards and more. However, all of the sales, stats and awards are just the background to Hart’s mission to spread songs of hope and unity wherever he goes. Whether touring with a band or as a solo performer, Hart carries a singular ability to bring the audience together for the show and beyond.

His debut solo EP album ‘Island Soul’ was released worldwide in June 2017. After another busy summer of touring festivals and venues across western Canada this summer, Caleb Hart & The Royal Youths are set to release their debut EP album 'origiNation' in the fall and will be touring Western Canada alongside soulful roots rocker Buckman Coe.

“Through his work with Tasman Jude and now as frontman of the Royal Youths, Caleb Hart has established himself as one of Canada’s premier reggae voices, roots-reggae smooth to dancehall grimy in the blink of an eye and always armed with a message of peace, love and hope.” – Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival

“The sound mastered by these guys is a team effort, plainly displayed in their immaculate performances. It’s the combination of heart shared by each member of the band, and a flawless synchronicity of talent, skill, and simply soul.” – Jessy Savage http://www.jessysavage.com/features/caleb-hart-and-the-royal-youths-road-to-riff

The Royal Youths formed on Vancouver Island in October 2015 as a one time backing band for Caleb Hart. Since then they have grown into an incredible band that brings their own unique funky reggae into every room they play.

Search for WENG WENG: Vernon book launch

TO ALL THE ODD-BALL-MOVIE LOVERS OUT THERE - Join us at Record City for an event that will mark you year! My film-maker friend from Australia, Andrew Leavold, is making a special visit to Vernon as he passes along with his book-launch tour of the biography he's recently published telling of his journey creating the documentary ‘The Search for Weng Weng.' I won't go into much detail, but let it be enough to catch your attention that his mission was to locate a long lost Filipino acting star, who made a grand series of mock-James Bond type movies, performing all of his own bad-ass stunts. The catch is that he stood only about 2’9'' from the ground. This movie was a brilliant capture of Weng Weng’s incredible life story with an edge to humble the viewer.
Leavold’s book dives further into wilder depths of his seven year journey through the Philippines; travelling from Imelda Marcos’s birthday party to the poorest sumps of Manila and into the very heart of Filipino culture and history. It will be the adventure of a life time, told by the adventurer himself. He intelligent as he is odd, and is guaranteed to put on a great show!

Vissia w/ Lili Starr

Hurry Hard Records & SMG Endeavors presents

Vissia
Place Holder Canadian Tour

Those of you who are fans of Alabama Shakes, or just good ole rock 'n' roll from a powerful female songwriter, might very well come to love Edmonton, Alberta's VISSIA. VISSIA might be a new name, but she is an old soul who bleeds blues. There is boldness in the direct songwriting, which suggests honesty pulled from real life experiences, but also a cleverness that comes from hard, steady work and maturity. This is pure rock 'n' roll at its finest from an artist who is set to breakout at any moment.

Twin Bandit w/ Oliver Swain

Twin Bandit is Hannah Walker and Jamie Elliott. Together they bring you an intimate folk/roots performance with strong harmonies & original songs.
"Jamie and Hannah, your two original duets were simply some of the sweetest, most lovely things I’ve ever heard, and I regret that my most prosaic of souls could not express that in any more meaningful way that evening. Brad...a man of far more poetic nature, described your songs as having left him tingling and aglow. I can’t remember the lyrics or the melodies of the music you offered, but I will never forget how it made me feel." . -Jonathan Andrew Govias, Conductor

https://www.twinbandit.com/

Oliver Swain has been a celebrated musician for years, held in high regard in acoustic and folk music styles for both his astonishing instrumental and vocal abilities, though he seldom gives the genre a fully traditional treatment. Oliver Swain strays towards the whimsical, the spiritual, and the socially conscious side of what he likes to refer to as “chamber folk odyssey”, and it’s these beguiling and provocative elements that make him unique as an artist and songwriter. Devon Leger even called him “The Zen Rock Garden of old time music” No Depression

Maiya Robbie and Travis Weir

Tavis Weir Music:
Tavis Weir is an indie folk jazz musician and composer based in the okanagan valley. his songs are heavily inspired by nature and the canadian landscape. tavis has a degree in jazz guitar, but possesses a song-writing capability that cannot be taught. his expansive guitar playing and simple poetry transform the walls of a room into trees, seascapes and mountain ranges in the mind of the listener.

Maiya Robbie:
Like a storm about to break alongside a sky filled with sunshine,
Maiya’s music is a textural, vivid experience. Influenced by the sensibilities of folk and contemporary poets like Gwendolyn McEwen and Mary Oliver, as well as touched with a healthy measure of indie ingenuity, Ms. Robbiehas the finesse to not only talk to the heart of a matter, but to take it in both hands and deliver it into the lap of her listeners. She resides in the agriculturally rich South Okanagan of British Columbia, where rabbit bush, clay banks, lakes and cherry trees offer a creative haven.Several years ago (2006), Maiya cofounded Shane Koyczan and the Short Story Long with legendary spoken word performer Shane Koyczan. As a solo artist, Maiya has shared the stage, opened for, and collaborated with many talented Canadian performers. Her performance and songwriting skills have earned her a 2008 BCIMA nomination for Best Female Performer of the Year, a strong and growing fan base, and the honoured respect of her peers.

Hearing Trees (WPG) in Vernon w/Saint Mountain

Hearing Trees (Winnipeg) comes to Vernon for the first time! Joined by Saint Mountain from Nelson.

Hearing Trees is anxious, edge-riding rock with a backdrop of colourful, image-inducing lyrics. Frontman Graham Hnatiuk’s immersive poetry grasps the gritty, dry edge of modern life, spinning it over the band’s layered soundscapes reminiscent of post-punk and Canadiana, producing “an elegant sound with rough edges, like a well-loved blanket” (Canadian Beats).

Hearing Trees hit the ground running in 2017, opening for Iskwé, performing at Festival du Voyageur in Winnipeg, appearing on Killing Moon’s (UK) New Moons Vol VII compilation, dropping a new EP, as well as an appearance at Canadian Music Week in Toronto.

Having found their stride in touring, using the stage night in and night out to refine their sound and new songs. What has emerged is an evolved but distinct sound, drawing comparisons to R.E.M, The Editors, The National and Matthew Good.

Orb Sceptre Throne

Orb Sceptre Throne is a 3-piece rock band that mixes classic and modern sounds with a focus on melody, harmony and catchy song writing. Started as a side project from a well-established heavy metal group in the Okanagan, Orb Sceptre Throne has become the main focus of creativity between the three members, who bring experience from a wide variety of musical projects. OST draws influence from hard rock, indie rock, country, funk, pop and more for a dynamic and original sound but with a familiar feeling.

West My Friend w/ Local Friends

West My Friend:
Described as everything from indie-roots to chamber-folk, West My Friend has an acoustic blend of instruments and four-part harmonies that challenges the conventions of popular music. The band features pure and thrillingly elastic vocals with catchy arrangements of bass, guitar, mandolin, and accordion that draw from jazz, classical, folk, and pop influences. The Orchard - The Great Unknown Tour w/ The Velveteen

The Orchard's new album The Great Unknown is a cosmic blend of rock, country and pop. It’s a vision the pair had from the beginning of completely ignoring genre definitions and just doing what came naturally.
"Rolling out of the Canadian Rockies and across the prairie Province of Alberta, The Orchard finds its sound in Canadiana. Great tunes, great guitars and great Vocals. This is a real deal, no B.S. band playing real music."
- Jim Scott (multi grammy award winning producer/mixer)
